Welcome to Bar, sunniest town on the coast of Montenegro, town of olives, mandarins and rich history.
Strolling through the old town you will find fingerprints of civilizations that shaped the history of the town. In official documents town was for the first time mentioned in 6th century by Byzantium historian Procopius, but surrounding areas were inhibited during 3rd and 2nd century BC in Roman Empire, and even before that – during Illyrian period.
From then on the town was inhabited by Slavs, it was a part of Byzantium, Doclea (today’s Montenegro), part of Nemanjic country (Serbia), Republic of Venice, Ottoman Empire until it finally became the part of Montenegrin country. Explore remains of old town Bar and revisit its rich history.
Don’t miss a chance to have a meal or drink in one of the restaurants in beautiful street leading to the main gates of the old town.
Everywhere around the old town you will find beautiful olive gardens.
Few minutes ride and you will have a chance to stand in front of the “Old Olive Tree” – the oldest olive tree in Europe. This tree is approx. 2400 years old, and believe it or not – it still bears fruit.
There are also monuments worth visiting in the new part of the town, such as king Nicola’s castle and St. Jovan Vladimir Temple. The both monuments are on the short walking distance one from the other, and so one of the most beautiful pedestrian streets in Montenegro.
